Pizza Sauce Recipe: An Amazing Tomato Sauce for Pizzas

In most cases, pizzas have a basic topping of a tomato sauce and some form of cheese, usually mozzarella. They then have any additional toppings to suit the diners taste. Getting the sauce right is an essential element of making sure any pizza is delicious, and our easy pizza sauce recipe will help you to do just that.

What Are the Main Elements That Make a Perfect Pizza Sauce Recipe?

There are two things to think about when making a tomato sauce for pizzas. First is the flavour of the pizza sauce. Creating a sauce with a diluted tomato flavour is not good enough, and it will ruin your pizza. You can get a rich tomato flavour by using a combination of canned chopped tomatoes and tomato puree, then reducing the sauce to get a good concentrated flavour.

Your choice of herbs for the pizza sauce are also key to getting the flavour right. We use plenty of garlic for an authentic Italian flavour, along with dried herbs such as oregano and basil. You can also use fresh herbs or mixed Italian herbs if you prefer.

The second consideration when making the pizza sauce recipe is the consistency. If it is too watery, it will lack flavour and make your pizza base soggy. On the other hand, if it is too thick, it can feel claggy in your mouth and overpower the flavour of the other toppings.

How Long Does It Take to Make a Tomato Sauce for Pizzas?

You can make a basic tomato sauce in approximately 10 minutes, so it is quick and easy to make. If you buy a pizza base to add your own toppings, you can make and cook your pizza in under 30 minutes. However, I prefer to cook the sauce for longer to reduce the sauce and enhance the flavours.

In the instructions for the pizza sauce recipe, I went to the middle ground and used 20 minutes as a guideline for the cooking time. Although, as I have already stated, you can cook it quicker or leave it to cook slowly. Personally, I combine all the sauce ingredients, then leave the sauce to simmer while I make the pizza dough, prepare the pizza toppings, and preheat the oven to bake the pizza.

Ingredients for the Pizza Sauce Recipe

  • 2 cans of chopped tomatoes

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

  • 4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped

  • 2 tablespoons of tomato puree

  • 1 teaspoon each of dried basil and oregano

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Directions: How to Make the Pizza Sauce Recipe

  • Add the olive oil to a medium-sized pan and put over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped garlic to the pan and cook for a minute, being careful not to burn it.
  • Cover the garlic with the chopped tomatoes and tomato puree and stir.
  • Reduce the heat to low so that the flavours infuse slowly.
  • Add the dried basil and rosemary, season the ingredients with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  • Cook all the ingredients together for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. You can cook longer to reduce the sauce and create a richer flavour.
  • Blitz the ingredients with a hand blender or in a food processor, then spoon the tomato pizza sauce onto your pizza bases before adding the other toppings.

Additional Tips

  • If you want to add a little heat to your sauce, add either a finely chopped fresh chilli or a teaspoon of dried chilli flakes to the sauce.
