One of my children’s favourite meals is pizza, which is also something I love to eat as we all love Italian food. However, none of us are keen on the frozen and premade versions you can buy from the shops. We all much prefer fresh, homemade pizzas. I make a pizza sauce and pizza base recipe from scratch, and everyone chooses their own pizza toppings.
It has taken me some time and plenty of experimentation to find the perfect pizza base recipe. Finally, I have one I am happy with and use all the time. The recipe for pizza bases I use is a traditional method. It involves using yeast as a rising agent, kneading the dough twice, and leaving the pizza dough to prove.
Using the Pizza Base Recipe to Make Any Pizza
Once you have the pizza base dough, you can add any pizza toppings of your choice. Some of my children prefer a simple Margherita pizza, while I love spicy, flavoursome toppings such as pepperoni and jalapenos. Sometimes, I experiment with different toppings. One of my best variations was a pizza flatbread with chorizo, feta, and jalapenos.
Regardless of the additional toppings you use on your pizza base, we recommend using our pizza sauce recipe, which is full of authentic Italian flavour. We also recommend using Mozzarella cheese for most types of pizza.
You can also keep things simple and use the pizza dough recipe to make a tasty garlic bread to accompany another Italian dish. Garlic bread goes well with our Italian recipes, including salmon tagliatelle with broccoli, lamb ragu, lasagne, and our creamy chicken, tomato, and chorizo pasta bake.
Here is our easy pizza base recipe for you to use with any pizza. It makes enough for six, eight-inch pizzas or four, 12-inch pizzas.

An easy pizza base recipe you can use to make any pizza with the toppings of your choice.
Ingredients for the Pizza Base Recipe
1.5 lb/ 700g ’00’ flour (or strong white bread flour), plus extra for dusting
7g dried easy-blend yeast
2 tablespoons of olive oil
50ml/ 2 fl. oz warm milk
325ml/11fl oz warm water
2 tsp salt
Directions: How to Make the Pizza Dough Recipe
- Warm the milk in a pan for a few minutes over a low heat. Do not boil or simmer the milk. If it gets too hot, it will kill and inactivate the yeast.
- Measure the warm water from the hot tap.
- Put the flour, salt, and yeast into a large mixing bowl.
- Stir in the warm milk and olive oil, then gradually add the water until you have a soft dough.
- Dust your work surface with a little flour and turn out the dough from the bowl to the work surface.
- Knead the dough for approximately five minutes until it is elastic and smooth. Then, put it into a clean bowl and cover it with a damp tea towel.
- Leave the dough in a warm place to rise for about 1.5 hours.
- Knead the dough for a second time before leaving it to rise for another hour.
- Preheat the oven to 220C/ 425F.
- Divide the dough into six balls of roughly equal size, then use a rolling pin to roll out each ball on a lightly floured surface until it is approximately eight inches in diameter.
- Put the pizza bases on baking trays, then top each with some pizza base sauce or passata, slices of mozzarella, and other toppings.
- Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes, until the edges are puffed up and golden.
Additional Tips
- Although ’00’ flour or strong bread flour are best to make the pizza dough recipe, you can use plain flour.
- Create a herby dough with extra flavour by adding a teaspoon of oregano or Italian mixed herbs.
