Although I make the regular slaw, my kids really love my funky red cabbage slaw, as there is something fun about having such a colourful side dish on the plate. It is quick and simple to make and is a great way to get the kids to eat a variety of vegetables. When served as an accompaniment, it also adds a splash of colour to your meal.
This tasty dish takes less than 10 minutes to prepare, so it’s easy to make when you’re in a hurry or busy. It is also an easy recipe to adapt, as you can add fruit, spices, nuts, or many other ingredients. See the additional tips section for our suggestions.
We use a combination of mayonnaise, salad cream, and double cream to bind the grated vegetables together. However, you can adapt the recipe by using only one or two of these ingredients. You can also use creme fraiche as a healthier alternative to double cream.

Additional Tips
- Extra ingredients: You can add extra ingredients if you want a little variety. Try adding chopped apples, sultanas, or walnuts for a twist.
- Spice it up: Although the slaw is already delicious, you can make it spicier for extra flavour. Adding a teaspoon of curry powder, chopped chilli, or smoked paprika are just three ways to change this accompaniment’s flavour.
- Reduce the fat: It is easy to reduce the fat content of this side dish. Use low-fat mayonnaise and salad cream, and omit the double cream from the recipe.
- Change the colour: You can change the colour of the slaw by using white cabbage and white onion. However, it is important to note that doing so means you will also change the slaw’s flavour.
