Ree Drummond was born Ann Marie Smith, and Ree is a nickname that she has had since she was a child. She was born on 6 January 1969 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Drummond attended the University of Southern California. Originally, she was studying journalism, but she then switched to gerontology, which is the study of ageing. She obtained her degree in 1991.
